Steve Nash - Ball Drop Drill

As you can read/see, I've been on quite a basketball kick lately. Here's another good one from Steve Nash, but you're going to need a partner or at the very least a wall for this one. I'm not sure why he calls it ball drop instead of ball toss, but he is Canadian after all. This one is also good for agility and reaction time training as well, not just basketball.

Steve Nash - Knife Drill

This is a good drill to get quick cross overs in getting dribblers used to changing hands quickly and under control.

Steve Nash - Basic ball handling drills warm-up

I've been using most of these at my 3-4th grade team practice. Steve does a lot more off the floor work and close to the floor work than I've been doing. Perhaps I'll integrate some of these that we haven't done yet at Saturday's practice.

Basketball Warm Up Routine

For some reason I'm when you're in your mid 20's and aren't forced to warm-up by coaches anymore, you stop warming up and stretching.

This is a good set of warm up prep by Mark Verstegen. They refer to it as movement prep. Hand walk, hip cross over, elbow to instep and inverted hamstring are the 4 that i concentrate on, but they are all great if you have the time.

Basketball Post Moves

So I played tonight and I couldn't finish to save my life. I got great looks just couldn't put the biscuit in the basket. Anyways I came across this video last week and I think the mental review helped me get open in the post.

Vertical Training - a good place to start

This is a great place to start if you want to jump higher. The "one legged squats" shown are also called pistol squats. They are hard to do with out good hamstring and hip flexibility so as you progress with flexibility they should get easier.

USA Hockey Video "Off-Ice Stickhandling" (part 1)

This is a great video. I did some of these myself a few nights before a pick up hockey game and saw immediate results.

Functional Movement Lineman Progression

This past football season I had a player that was very strong and a good weight at line, but had a very hard time gettiing in and out of his stance. He did well against kids with similar stance issues, but against quicker kids he had a lot of problems.

I came across this video and in the first 15 seconds it showed where his major problems were.

"slow into your stance, slow out of your stance"

The hip joint is the second strongest mechanical lever in the body next to the jaw. To use it to it's full potential you need to increase your strength and flexibility in this joint.

USA Hockey Instructional Video "Off-Ice Training 1"

Some good hockey training stuff by USA Hockey

Single Leg Dumbell Squat

I do this one in my basement. I have two 45lb dumbells, 40lb weight vest and I weigh 180. Since it's only one leg we can add 90lbs for body weight. basically like a 220lb squat with very little equipment and it's better than a normal squat because it requires more balance, more core stability, and works each leg individually.

Learn to dribble with these drills

Now most of the time i wouldn't advocate watching any kind of streetball drubbling because a lot of it isn't even legal. However this streetball master has the right drills to get you from just being able to dribble to making dribbling a strength.

Vertical workout by Funk Roberts

This is a pretty complete jump workout. It has a bunch of plyometric stuff, along with some strength work for your rest periods between plyo sets. great use of down time.

Lunge Matrix

This is a good movement to build linear and lateral strength in one exercise called a lunge matrix.

Basketball - Post Defense Sportskool

The other night I got lit up by another guy in the post, so of course I had to look for some knowledge to improve my game as my age goes up and my vertical goes down.

Drill - Ball Drop

This is a great drill for building speed, acceleration, reaction time, and quickness.

I read that Deion Sanders had the record for shoulder level tennis ball drop getting to it before it hit the ground from 15 yards away. This is a kids version of the same drill.

Frank Yang's amazing box jump

I've seen this guy do some incredible things, but this could be the most impressive. After building enough leg strength, isometric strength and some plyos this is what you can accomplish.

New blog same Coach
